George, is situated on the Garden Route half-way between two major cities, Cape Town in the Western Cape and Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The town is surrounded by the Outeniqua Mountains, forests, rivers and picturesque farmlands. With sophisticated road, air and rail links to all major centres in South Africa, it is a convenient base from which to explore the many attractions of the surrounding area.
At the foot of the magnificent Outeniqua mountains there is an abundance of trails and mountain walks in unspoilt indigenous forests for all nature lovers to enjoy, with the Indian Ocean on its doorstep!
As one of South Africa’s renowned golfing destinations, George offers around 10 golf courses, driving ranges and a world class golf academy. These courses include the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate, Oubaai Golf Estate and the George Golf Club. The Outeniqua Transport Museum houses replica of old stations, displays of locomotives, coaches etc. - certainly worth a visit and fun for the whole family.
George is the main business centre of the Garden Route and offers excellent conference facilities, businesses, shopping centres, transport and sporting facilities, with fantastic accommodation options ranging from hotels, Bed and Breakfasts, self-catering units and lodges.
ABOUT GEORGE
George is set in the very centre of the spectacular Garden Route - surrounded by oceans, mountains, forests and farmlands – making it a sought-after holiday destination and the perfect location for the MUT by UTMB®.
Situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa, ‘George’ goes far beyond the city CBD. It includes towns such as Wilderness and Uniondale, as well as many smaller hamlets like Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay, Hoekwil and beyond.
Its diverse landscapes - spanning from the semi-desert open plains and aloes in Uniondale, only 1.5 hours away from George and Wilderness’s majestic mountains and cool blue oceans - certainly make it a paradise suited for outdoor enthusiasts like us Mutters! There are over 2,000km of mapped trails and plenty of adrenalin-fuelled adventures. The area also boasts premier golf courses, pristine beaches and art, cultural and history experiences. There are great gastronomic experiences for foodies, as well as wining and dining rewards after all your hard work at the MUT.
With plenty to do and enjoy, as well as a comfortable winter climate, George is ideal for a longer break around your MUT by UTMB® experience. Adventures await!
ROAD AND AIR CONNECTIVITY
The George Airport is a domestic terminal, with direct connectivity to Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is also Africa’s first airport to be solar powered. In February 2016, a 200m2 solar plant was launched at the airport, committed to clean energy generation and sustainability. It features cafes and kiosks for shopping, as well as a Bidvest Premier Lounge. There are several car hire options available.
The two main road routes from Cape Town to George are either the N2 or Route 62 via Oudtshoorn. Others prefer to take Route 62 up until Barrydale and then connect back onto the N2 for a faster drive. Both routes are spectacular, so you cannot go wrong! The N2 also connects George and Wilderness to neighbouring Garden Route towns, continuing all the way to Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). George is connected to Oudtshoorn via the N12, and Uniondale connects to George and Oudtshoorn via the N9, and via the R339 to Knysna.
